Gelandesprung Newsletters & President's Message

You knew you were in the right place at The Woods by our “Gelandesprung Ski Club” sign being placed on an easel (our historian brought the easel from home to spruce things up a little) and by the line of people waiting to get into the room for our Spring Banquet.  After the cocktail hour, the meal served by The Woods was family style and delicious.  We switched things up a bit this year during our annual meeting when I tried to tell a couple of jokes that left the banqueters scratching their heads surprise, and giving away door prizes throughout the night versus at the very end of the evening.

Upsets abounded in the basketball world of March Madness, as well as in the downhill skiing world with the cancellation of the Marquette Day Trip of March 20th.  We all walked into the pre-trip meeting soaked to the skin from rain.  Marquette Mountain had 10/24 runs open on the 20th with 3 of 4 chair lifts running.  Their website actually stated:  “At this point we are riding day to day all dependent of the conditions and weather.  Please call ahead before planning your trip.”

The Spring Banquet is scheduled for April 22nd.  The sign-up forms are due April 8th.   Elections will be held for the Vice President and Treasurer positions.  Gary Austin, our Vice President, has indicated that he will not be running again.  He has too many on-going personal activities to continue with the responsibilities of the VP position.  I would like to thank Gary for all of his hard work and dedication !

Beaver Creek was a great ski week !!  Dick Wortiska and Al Gardapee did a wonderful job in the preparation—from booking with Southwest Airlines (who should be commended for their service), to planning fun activities such as a wine & cheese party, directions on how to get to Vail, a fun chili cook-off, etc.  It was terrific !  We all came back safe & sound with great memories to share.

Our Spring Banquet is scheduled for April 22nd and as the temperature increases in March, so too our price for the Spring Banquet must increase to $17.00.  The Woods has increased their prices, so we must follow suit.  The Spring Banquet is also the time for elections.  This year the Vice President and Treasure’s positions are up for re-election.  If you would like to ‘throw your hat in the ring’, please let one of the Board members know in advance or at the Banquet.  Here is a brief description of what each position does:

Rave reviews were told of the Lutsen/Spirit Mountain trip this year.  Spirit Mountain was a great side trip and addition to the weekend.  Many thanks to the trip leaders, Frank Wickham and Colleen Thompson, for all their efforts.  The pre-trip meeting for Beaver Creek was exciting.  Dick Wortiska and Al Gardapee, the trip leaders, have some fun events planned for the week.  You’ll have to hear all about them in the March Newsletter.

The pictures taken on the Lutsen/Spirit Mountain trip have been uploaded to the Website under Photo Galleries.  We will be making a separate tab that is more noticeable on the Website for all to view these pictures.  Please be sure to send your pictures to Jenny Lunde, our Web Meister, after you’ve labeled them & zipped them to:

Happy New Year to everyone!  To start the New Year, we have a couple of new announcements to make.  Mary Halloin will be new to the Board as our Marketing Chair.  She will be working with a team she has created in Jeannene Jenkins, who will focus on Facebook, and Jim Derenne, who will focus on selling our Club to new members.  Mary will be the point person, so any ideas you may have for marketing our club, please send them to for her review.
