Gelandesprung Newsletters & President's Message

It was like a breath of fresh Spring air to see Dick Wortiska at the Spring Banquet! To show our appreciation for everything Dick does for our Club now and in the past, the Board gave him a plaque.  After the standing ovation for Dick subsided, Dr. Tom Nockerts, a ski patroller for Brule was a guest speaker.  He told us what it takes to be part of a ski patrol and asked if anyone was interested. If you were not at the banquet and would like to know more, please contact me at

Steamboat was a wonderful trip!  Many thanks to Dick Wortiska for his preliminary work on the trip and to Gary and Dee Austin for pulling everything together as Trip Leaders.  Dick Wortiska has been continuing to battle cancer and the group at Steamboat missed him on the slopes.  The Board has approved purchasing a plaque for him to hang on his wall to lift his spirits and continue the fight against his illness.  Our ski club has been like a second family to him—any time he and I talk about the ski club, it brings a smile to his face.  When I went to visit him after I got back from Steamboat, he asked me where we should go Out-west for next year.

Top of the Day To You !!  On March 4th we will be in Steamboat for a week. With Dick Wortiska battling cancer, Gary Austin has agreed to step up and become our Western Trip Chair Assistant (title created in Dick’s absence).  He will also be the Trip Leader for Steamboat, with his wife, Dee, his assistant. Both are in constant communication with Dick and the plans they have organized are looking exciting for the week.

I’m hoping Punxsutawney Phil won’t see his shadow tomorrow so we have another 6 weeks of winter !!  The ski season is flying by, just like those who join in the NASTAR funwink  With our 2 day trips this season to Marquette Mountain and Granite Peak behind us, we have 2 more mid-west weekend trips to Mt. Ripley/Porkies and Lutsen/Spirit still on the horizon.  Seats are still available, so sign up as soon as you can.

Although our trip to Steamboat is now closed, the week has quite a few fun activities planned by Gary and Dee Austin, our trip leaders.  Dick Wortiska has taken ill this year and will not be able to join us.  Gary Austin has stepped up to be our trip leader and Dee his assistant.  We are all praying that Dick makes a full recovery.  When I last talked with him, he is determined to regain his strength to join us all next year.

Happy New Year !!  Our new year has started successfully with the Marquette Day Trip behind us. Frank Wickham and his assistant, Mike Bast, did a nice job leading the group for a day of skiing. Our next trip will be another day trip to Granite Peak. Seats are still available--be sure to sign up if you are not going to Europe.

If you are interested in winning the Donny Steffens award, please keep track of the days you have skied with Gelandesprung. Whomever has skied the most days with Gelandesprung, has an opportunity to win. Seats are still available for our Midwest trips--so sign up for some skiing fun!!

Parking will be available for all of our trips in 2 places:  The Bar in Appleton and East Town Mall.
