Gelandesprung Newsletters & President's Message

February brings Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and brings us back from our week at Sun Peaks, British Columbia on February 3rd.  By the time we get home, we will know if we’ll have another 6 weeks of winter for skiing !   There is still room available on the bus for our Mont Ripley/Mount Bohemia trip the weekend of February 23-25.  Sign up soon!  (Look for the summary of the week at Sun Peaks in next month’s newsletter.)

Penny Holman, our Newsletter Editor, has had to resign her position to help her parents in Texas.  Thank you Penny, for all of your hard work and creativity !  If anyone would like to volunteer as our Newsletter Editor, please let any Board member know—we could really use your help.

Julie’s Jive January

Happy New Year!!  The preparations and planning for our week at Sun Peaks is coming together nicely—thanks to Tom Piette, our trip leader and Ron Quick, the assistant trip leader.  It is snowing at Sun Peaks; their weather forecast indicates:  An upper low currently off the Washington coast will move into the North Cascades by this afternoon.  I love traveling to new places !!  There is snow in the forecast a week before we arrive almost every day !  Today, the following trials have been groomed—it looks like a great selection.

The Richard (Dick) Wortiska Memorial bench purchased from the Memorial Fund is located right next to the Donny Steffens Memorial bench on the Mountain Bay Trail.  They are located 1.3 miles west from 900 Lakeview Drive (the start of the trail) or 100 yards east from another entrance to the trail across from 1357 Cardinal Lane.

The seasonal downhill-ski marketing campaign has come to an end.  (To promote downhill skiing activities for the upcoming season, there are a bunch of us who “go on tour”.  So if you attended the Warren Miller Film, you would have found ski clubs, a ski patrol table, mid-west hills selling lift tickets, and vendors who are selling downhill skis.  We, as well as Sly Fox, are happy to be part of this ‘touring’ group.)

Our Fall Banquet on Friday the 13th went very well, considering the datesurprise  After a great dinner served by The Woods, we all raised our glass in remembrance of Dick Wortiska.  The $250 we donated to Dick’s Memorial Fund is going to purchase a bench on the Mountain Bay State Trail.  We are not sure where it will be placed at this time, but hopefully near Donny Steffens’s bench.

In this newsletter, you will find a couple of pictures of the banquet room to show the pretty decorations Danice Herald, our Historian, set up.  One of the pictures shows the awards that we received from Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council--for 2 years in a row we won for our Newsletter and Website.

Our Fall Banquet is October 13th this year to kick off the new Ski Season!  It should be another great evening for all of us to get together again.  At the banquet, all of our old photos and albums will be given away to anyone who would like them.  This is because we have put them all on DVD’s to be shown at our gatherings.  After the Fall Banquet, the old photos/albums will be thrown away.

O Canada  ♫  —who’s ready to enjoy the Great Outdoors for a week amid three mountains that surround a European-style, ski through village at Sun Peaks?  With the potential to see the Northern Lights, to eat Pâté chinois (a French Canadian dish similar to shepherd’s pie) or go on a thrilling dog sled ride after skiing across 3 skiable peaks, what a great new adventure for all of us!  The exchange rate of the dollar against Canada’s loonie jumped in early September.  Although the Board immediately locked in costs, we had to increase the cost of the trip by $55.
